Yamadera, located in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism and is officially called Mt. It is said that Jikaku Daishi opened it in the second year of Jogan (860). The highlights of Yamadera include the Konponchu-do Hall, which stands on top of a cliff, and a stone tablet with a poem written by Matsuo Basho, ``Quietness and the voice of a cicada that permeates the rocks.'' To get to Yamadera, you have to climb over 1070 steps from the trailhead, but there are teahouses and souvenir shops along the way. Yamadera is a tourist spot where you can enjoy the nature of each season.
