Kumamoto Castle is a castle located in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, which is known as one of Japan's three most famous castles. The castle was built from 1601 to 1607 by Kiyomasa Kato, a warlord of the Sengoku period. Buildings such as the castle tower and turrets faithfully reproduce the appearance of the Edo period, and are designated as national treasures and important cultural properties.
Kumamoto Castle was severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, but restoration work is currently underway. From Ninomaru Square and Kato Shrine, you can see the castle tower and stone walls. In addition, there is also a system called “Reconstruction Castle Lord” to solicit support for the restoration of Kumamoto Castle.
Kumamoto Castle is a recommended sightseeing spot for those who are interested in history and culture. You can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons. During the cherry blossom season, about 800 cherry trees are in full bloom. In autumn, the foliage is spectacular. In winter, Kumamoto Castle covered in snow is also magical.
Kumamoto Castle is about 15 minutes by bus from JR Kumamoto Station. Alternatively, take the streetcar to Suizenji Koen-dori Station and walk for about 10 minutes. The entrance fee is 600 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students. The opening hours are from 8:30 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:30).
