Nara Park is a national park located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, where historical and cultural tourist spots such as Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and Mount Wakakusa are concentrated. In addition, about 1,200 deer live freely, and you can feed them deer rice crackers. Nara Park is the oldest park in Japan and is registered as a World Heritage Site.
There are many things to see in Nara Park, but I will introduce some representative ones.
- Todaiji Temple: A Buddhist temple built in the Nara period. It has the world's largest wooden structure, the Great Buddha Hall, as well as Buddhist statues and sculptures designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Especially famous is the 15-meter-tall Daibutsu (a seated gilt-bronze Shaka Nyorai statue), the largest Buddha statue in Japan.
- Kasuga Taisha: A shrine built in the Nara period, located at the foot of Mt. Kasuga. The enshrined deities include Amenokoyane no Mikoto and Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, and have been revered by successive emperors and aristocrats. In the precincts, there are the main hall and worship hall designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. Also, at the "Onmatsuri" held every December, about 3,000 lanterns are lit to create a magical atmosphere.
- Wakakusayama: A mountain in the center of Nara Park with an altitude of 342 meters. From the top of the mountain, you can see the city of Nara and the nearby mountains. During the Wakakusa Yamayaki festival held every January, the entire mountain is enveloped in fire and smoke, creating a spectacular sight.
Nara Park is a place that can be enjoyed all year round, but the scenery is especially beautiful in spring and autumn. Cherry blossoms and azaleas are in full bloom in spring, and autumn leaves change color in autumn. Seasonal events and festivals are also held here.
Nara Park is about a 20-minute walk from JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station. Buses and rental bicycles are also available.
Nara Park is a wonderful place where you can feel the history and culture of Japan. There are many ways to enjoy the area, such as interacting with deer, visiting ancient structures, and enjoying nature. Nara Park is a tourist destination where you can fully enjoy the charm of Japan. Please visit once by all means.
